1 dead after plane crashes, burns in southern Indiana

MADISON, Ind. (AP) – A southern Indiana sheriff says one person has died after a single-engine airplane struck power lines and crashed near Madison.

Jefferson County Sheriff John Wallace says one body was found in the wreckage. The name of the victim has not been released.

Indiana State Police say the plane had just taken off Thursday morning from Madison Municipal Airport when it clipped some power lines.

Wallace says emergency responders needed to wait for Duke Energy representatives to secure the power lines before they could approach the burning wreckage.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the plane was a Piper PA-38-112.

It’s the second fatal plane crash in Indiana this week. Two people died after a single-engine airplane crashed after takeoff Monday from a private airport near Rockville in western Indiana.
