1 found dead in Plainfield retention pond

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — One person was found dead inside a vehicle found in a retention pond in Plainfield Sunday morning.

According to Plainfield Fire Department public information officer Brent Anderson, a tactical team was called to the area of Newberry Road and Fieldstone Lane before 10 a.m. on reports of a possible vehicle in a retention pond.

“The roadway ends at the pond so it does appear that the vehicle entered the roadway at the end of Fieldstone and went into the pond and then it was removed on the opposite side of the pond,” said Plainfield Deputy Chief Joe Aldridge.

The pond is located in a residential neighborhood on the city’s west side.

Aldridge told News 8 that emergency crews were called to the area because of a set of tire tracks that were seen in the frost going into the pond.

Divers found one person deceased inside the vehicle in the pond. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Neighbors that live near the pond say they never heard or saw anything that would have led them to believe a truck drove into the pond.

“I look out the window and I see 20 fire trucks, police cars. I was getting ready for church and that definitely changed our day,” says neighbor Macy Woodley.

When neighbors started to see crews arrive, initially they were confused why they were surrounding the pond.

“It is kind of shocking that a big truck could be totally submerged without us noticing,” says neighbor Jenna McDermed.

Police have not said whether or not they suspect foul play or if the truck found in the pond belonged to anyone in the neighborhood. There is no word yet on how long police believe the truck was in the water.
