Battle over WWII tank causing divisions in Kokomo
KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) – The future of a Sherman tank that has honored World War II for decades is causing divisions between veterans and Kokomo officials.
Mayor Greg Goodnight denies the city plans to move the M4 tank that has been displayed at Foster Park to an American Legion post. But Legion officials say they were contacted about the tank and urged to write Goodnight requesting that it be moved.
Legion Post 6 Commander Jerry Mitchell tells the Kokomo Tribune he’s having second thoughts because of the turmoil.
Goodnight says veterans’ groups have contacted the city over the years about moving the tank to a more veteran-centered location.
Jerry Paul of the Howard County Veterans Memorial says he worries that politicians are using veterans as “talking points” ahead of the election.
