Can I get my COVID-19 booster shot if I’m pregnant?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Health officials say the COVID-19 vaccines are shown to be safe for pregnant women.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other medical agencies suggest pregnant women should be fully vaccinated.

But what about booster shots?

Pregnant women and expectant families want to do what’s best for themselves and their infants to avoid the coronavirus, and that effort, doctors say, includes getting a COVID-19 booster even if a woman is still carrying.

“Right now, we are unclear as to how long we are protected by the vaccine,” said Dr. Cameual Wright, market chief medical officer at CareSource. “We are recommending people get booster shots so they can continue to have that high level of protection.

“We also want to emphasize that women who fall into that category, being eligible for booster shots, should go ahead and get that booster shot even in they are still pregnant.”

Wright also says women who have just given birth are a particularly vulnerable group. If eligible, they should also consider getting their COVID-19 booster as soon as possible.

According to the most recent data from the CDC, 34% of pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 49 are fully vaccinated against the virus.
