Pendleton officer, suspect injured in police shooting in Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) — A Pendleton police officer received minor injuries in a shootout with a person at an Anderson gas station, Anderson police report. The person also was injured.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Get Go gas station on Broadway Street and West School Street. That’s on the north side of Anderson about a half-mile south of the interstation of State Road 9, Broadway Street, and Scatterfield Road.

Anderson police say the officer attempted a traffic stop on a suspect’s vehicle from a previous criminal investigation. The officer detained the female driver, and while speaking with her, a male from inside the vehicle, began shooting at the officer.

The officer and the suspect, who police identify as a 44-year-old man, exchanged multiple shots during the incident.

The suspect exited the vehicle and then fell to the ground.

The officer was injured during the exchange of gunfire but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Maj. Caleb McKnight told News 8.

The suspect shot received serious injuries. McKnight did not immediately know if those injuries were life-threatening.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to Anderson hospitals.

The Anderson Police Department Investigations Division is leading the investigation, and more details will be released as they become available.
