Dance team breaking Down syndrome barriers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WISH) – A dance team just south of Indianapolis is using its skills to spread an important message.

The members of the “Boogie Down” dance crew in Louisville, all have Down syndrome. They’re from Kentucky and Indiana.

Coach and choreographer Carly Stotts says this started as a way for members to get exercise. She says each song has specific choreography that dancers can pick up quickly. Stotts says the dancers are enthusiastic.

“It’s really amazing because they don’t care about the steps. They care about expressing themselves and having a good time and the steps just are there,” said Stotts.

Stotts says the group has performed at public events across the area. She also says the dancers want to remove the stigma associated with disabilities.
