Energy department predicts gas prices to stay low in 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – According to IndyGasPrices.com, the average price of one gallon of regular unleaded gas in Indianapolis is again below the $2 mark, at $1.96. That’s down from Monday when the average was at $2 even.

Last week drivers got a scare when prices suddenly spiked 40 cents. That had some people questioning if lower prices are here to stay, but the energy department thinks they are.

The department released its newest forecast on Tuesday. Officials predict the average nationwide price of gas in 2015 will be $2.33 per gallon, down from $3.36 last year. The department said that means typical U.S. households will spend $750 less on gas this year compared to 2014.

According to Gas Buddy, the average national price was at $2.10 Wednesday morning. That’s the lowest since 2009. For perspective, the site states the national average this time last year was $3.31 and in Indianapolis it was $3.38.
