Hendricks County families make dollars stretch at consignment sale
HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A mom-to-mom consignment sale is helping make ends meet for thousands of families.
The Here We Grow Again Kids Consignment Sale is a bi-annual event that has become far more than a shopping trip for families in need.
Amanda Carter has been rummaging through the racks for her three rascals since the Here We Grow Again Kids Consignment Sale started in Hendricks County almost 5 years ago.
“The quantity that they allow to come through here is amazing,” Carter said.
$90,000 items fill the Hendricks County Fairgrounds for the five-day sale. Carter is also one of 550 people who not only shops, but also sells at the event.
“If it weren’t for this, being able to consign and purchase items that I need for winter, there’s no way they would have as much and as good of a quality,” Carter said.
Across the building in the check-out area, the line is long with shoppers ready to total up their deals.
“Just making sure all the items get accounted for cause the consignors want to get paid for the items that they’re selling,” Allyson Long said.
Long is spending many hours volunteering at the sale.
“This is my favorite sale. It’s like Christmas morning,” Long said.
Volunteering allows her and other parents to earn “grow bucks” to spend ten dollars at a time… not only on clothes, but big essentials too like strollers, furniture, and toys.
“Each subsequent kid, it really gets expensive, so when you can buy second hand and turn around and consign it too after that, you really are making our money and our dollars stretch,” Long said.
For some it’s a bargain hunt, but for others, it’s the only way to get their children the items they need.
“We have three kids now, so I’m always looking for ways that I can save money as a one-income family,” Long said.
The sale is free and open to the public at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Most items are 25 percent off on Friday and 50 percent off on Saturday.
