IMPD: Officer shoots detective on SE side, arrested in Cincinnati
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis police detective was shot on the far southeast side of the city late Friday night, and the suspect, who is also a member of IMPD, was taken into custody after fleeing to Cincinnati, according to the department.
According to IMPD, the off-duty IMPD officer who shot an IMPD investigator and fled to Ohio has been identified as 42-year-old Adrian Aurs, a member of IMPD since 1999.
According to IMPD, officers responded to the 6700 block of Valley Brook Way for a domestic violence call involving Aurs . The domestic violence situation was between Aurs and his estranged wife.
After officers and on-duty supervisor arrived on scene, they discovered that Aurs was not on scene.
Later Friday evening, around 10:30 p.m. a member of IMPD’s Special Investigations Unit returned to the scene. It was during that on-duty officer’s investigation inside the apartment building, when Aurs entered the apartment and shot at the investigator, injuring him.
Aurs’ estranged wife and children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but were not injured.
The investigator did return fire, however the suspect was not struck. The investigator, a 20-year veteran of IMPD, did sustain an injury to his elbow and back. He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in good condition with non-life threatening injuries.
After the shooting, the off-duty officer who shot the investigator fled the scene in his personal vehicle towards Cincinnati. Members of the Cincinnati Police Department were notified of the situation and of the suspect heading in their direction. Aurs has since been taken into custody by the CPD.
The process of extraditing Aurs back to Indianapolis is expected to begin soon.
He has also been immediately suspended without pay with a recommendation of termination of employment with IMPD.
Aurs faces a preliminary charge of attempted murder.
Friday’s incident was not Aurs first brush with the law or making the news.
In December of 2003, Aurs was apart of a fatal officer-involved shooting. Responding to a call of shots fired, when he discovered 23-year-old Justin Coasts, circling a neighborhood and who later refused to pull over for Aurs. A foot chase soon after ensued and shots were exchanged. Aurs was struck in the chest, but was not injured due to a bullet proof vest. Coats was fatal struck in the abdomen.
In December 2004, Aurs pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. At the time, state police said Aurs was attempting to changes lanes when he struck another vehicle being driven by a 31-year-old woman. The female did not suffer serious injuries as a result of the crash.
However, Aurs did refuse to a breathalyzer test and was later arrested for drinking and driving. He was inititally charged with public intoxication and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He did plead guilty and the charge of public intoxication was then dropped. In 2005, He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to undergo alcohol abuse evaluation.
In 2012, Aurs was involved in a deadly hit and run at 29th Street and Harding Road. A vehicle being driven by 78-year-old William Wilkings ran a stop sign and slammed into a red Jeep driven by Aurs. Wilkins did die in the crash, his wife, a passenger in the vehicle at the time, suffered a broken leg. Aurs, who was off-duty at the time of crash agreed to a voluntary blood draw. It came as .052, no criminal charges were brought against Aurs in the case.
Friday night’s shooting of a member of IMPD is the second such instance within a week. On Monday evening, police shot and killed a man after they say he shot an officer.
