Indiana surpasses 200 COVID-19 deaths; approaching 6,000 confirmed cases

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana State Department of Health says Indiana has more than 200 deaths related to COVID-19.

ISDH reported 30 more deaths and more than 400 new cases. Indiana now has 203 deaths and 5,943 confirmed cases. A total of 30,869 Hoosiers have been tested.

Marion County had 151 new cases, the most in the state.

Officials in Indiana are not yet providing information on recoveries. Last week, Dr. Kris Box said that information will be available as soon as medical codes are created that will offer COVID-19 recovery information, which the state does not currently have.

According to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, there have been more than 1,446,000 confirmed cases worldwide, with more than 308,000 recoveries and more than 83,000 deaths.

UPDATE 3:32 p.m.

The Juneteenth Community Celebration, set for June 6, and other June events at downtown’s Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art will not happen as scheduled due to the coronavirus.

UPDATE 3:16 p.m.

Kroger is adjusting pharmacy hours beginning on April 9.

  • Monday-Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kroger is also adjusting hours for Easter Sunday. Stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

UPDATE 2:53 p.m.

This year’s camping season for the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department, originally set to begin May 1, has been delayed until May 15 due to COVID-19.

UPDATE: 2:16 p.m.

Toyota is halting production at all plants until May 1. This includes the company’s plant in southwestern Indiana.

The company provided this statement:

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and decline in vehicle demand, Toyota is further extending the length of its production suspension at all of its automobile and components plants in North America, including Canada, Mexico and the U.S. The manufacturing facilities will remain closed through May 1, resuming production on May 4.

Our service parts operations and finished vehicle logistics centers will continue to operate in order to meet the ongoing needs of our customers. We will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate action in a timely manner.

UPDATE 11:11 a.m.

The city of Indianapolis says a morgue overflow will open near downtown on Thursday morning. The capacity is “upwards of 750 decedents,” according to the city.

“Being prepared to respond to an unprecedented public health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic requires a new level of collaboration among public health and public safety agencies,” Marion County Coroner Dr. Lee Sloan said in a statement. “Securing and standing up this temporary overflow morgue is just one example of the ways we are all working together to best provide for the needs of affected families during these challenging times.”
