Indiana woman allegedly left racist note on neighbor’s home

GREENTOWN, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana woman allegedly left a note on a neighbor’s home filled with racist slurs targeting the family’s black son and warning “this is a white neighborhood.”

Deborah Cantwell of Greentown faces misdemeanor intimidation and criminal mischief charges.

Authorities say a man told Howard County police on Oct. 13 that he’d found a racist letter attached to a door at his newly purchased home.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that court documents say the note was “racially offensive and threatening in nature” with racial slurs about the neighbor’s black son.

Police said Cantwell acknowledged writing the letter and also toilet-papering the family’s yard, telling investigators she “was trying to vent.”

Court records show Cantwell faces a Nov. 19 initial hearing, but don’t list an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
