FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — The Indiana operations of a Texas-based metal recycling company is about to undergo a major expansion, including the hiring of up to 100 people.

Fort Worth-based Sortera Alloys announced plans today to invest $4.2 million to move its manufacturing operations to Fort Wayne and create dozens of new jobs by the end of 2022.

The company uses artificial intelligence to sort and recycle non-ferrous scrap metal. The metals, such as aluminum, brass, copper, and zinc, are then converted into new, high-value products.

Sortera says it currently employs 15 associates in Texas and six in Indiana. It plans to hire software, electrical, and mechanical engineers, along with other staff beginning this month.

The recycler says it is partnering with local metal processing companies to deploy a fully integrated demonstration system, which will be able to produce 100 million pounds of recycled materials annually

“This new facility will be the place we take our technology to the next level,” said Nalin Kumar, president and chief executive officer of Sortera. “We believe we can make a global impact, and we’re happy to take this important step in Fort Wayne.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Sortera Alloys Inc. up to $1 million in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans.
