TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — The Vigo County Capital Improvement Board is moving forward on plans to acquire a former school property. The board has approved submitting a proposal to acquire the Vigo County School Corp. site, which would be used for parking for the planned Terre Haute Convention Center.

The CIB says the proposal includes a license for parking in the interim so the project can begin. A potential purchase price for the property was not provided.

“During this time of uncertainty, projects like this become very important to keep the economy moving forward,” said CIB President Jon Marvel. “We look forward to seeing the men and women who received contracts begin work.”

The CIB says the majority of the VCSC board has agreed to sell the property. However, a final vote to approve the sale is not expected to take place until Governor Eric Holcomb’s stay at home order is lifted.

Officials broke ground on the $25 million convention center last September. However, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said last month the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed back some of the city’s major projects, including the convention center.
