3 more Greek chapters at IU issued ‘cease and desist’ orders due to public health violations

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Two fraternities and one sorority at Indiana University Bloomington have been issued “cease and desist” orders, according to the university’s website.

IU’s Division of Student Affairs issued the orders to fraternities Sigma Phi Epsilon and Lambda Sigma Upsilon, as well as to sorority Omega Phi Beta on Wednesday. The order means the Greek chapters at IU cannot conduct regular activities.

Sigma Phi Epsilon has a house on campus, university spokesperson Chuck Carney told News 8 on Thursday. Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Omega Phi Beta are part of the Multicultural Greek Council.

According to IU spokesperson Chuck Carney, incidents involving the organizations are being investigated and the “cease and desist” orders are for violating public health regulations and restrictions. Details about the potential violations were not released.

Last month, Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity was issued a “cease and desist” order before it was closed by the Monroe County Health Department after permitting conditions that could allow the spread of COVID-19. The fraternity will remain closed through summer 2021.

MCHD was not involved with the “cease and desist” orders issued against the additional Greek chapters on Wednesday.

Seven Greek houses remained on quarantine Thursday. Thirty had been under quarantine orders on Sept. 2.

This article has been edited to clarify that Sigma Phi Epsilon has a house on IU’s campus and that Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Omega Phi Beta are part of the Multicultural Greek Council.
