Avon parents adjust to sudden school closure, e-learning

AVON, Ind. (WISH) — After the Monday announcement that Avon schools would be closed for two weeks after a student tested positive for COVID-19, parents had a short time to decide how to handle the closures.

“Several of my friends and I were chatting on text and we were all kind of surprised and a little panicked at first,” Avon parent Jennifer Mahoney said. “But, we all kind of talked each other down and after a few minutes, I think we were OK.”

Many families who rely on school for food were able to pick up 10 days’ worth of supplies from around the district. The district said more than 300 food packages were distributed and that the food had already been paid for by their food department for their regular meal service.

Online, community members have come forward asking for help with their needs and to ask what they can do to help.

“I’ve seen them maybe not come together for a little bit, and then I’ve seen everyone kind of ‘OK, let’s just come together and enough with the extras,’” Avon parent Michelle Logan said. “So I have seen some of my mom friends (say) ‘Let’s just rally up, who needs some stuff?’”

Michelle Logan is a stay-at-home mom, so she doesn’t need to worry about getting childcare for the next couple of weeks. News 8 got a peek into what her kids’ lives will look like through the quarantine as they focus on their e-learning and try to avoid boredom at home during their time off.

“I was so happy!” Avon student Alex Logan said. “Till, again, they said e-learning day Monday through Friday. I wasn’t happy.”

For kids, it’s a bit of a bummer because they miss school competitions and their friends, but parents are happy they’re staying safe and some get to spend quality time with family.

“I really look forward to summer time and us spending time together,” Michelle Logan said. “So this is just a nice excuse and I don’t have to go to the gym, and this is great!”

News 8 asked parents on Facebook how they felt about kids being off for two weeks. Many said they’ve been able to adjust quickly. Some parents say they’ll need a lot of ice cream and wine to make it through the coming weeks, but overall they’re happy the school made the decision to keep kids home.

If your family is in need of food and supplies and you weren’t able to make it out to a school Tuesday, the administration building will have those food packages available Monday through Friday from 7:30 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon.
