Fishers police officer hurt in motorcycle crash continues to improve

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — The wife of a Fishers police officer who was critically hurt in a motorcycle crash less than two weeks ago is sharing their story. 

Officer Binh Dennis and his wife, Mary, have been riding their motorcycle for years. They ride to Brown County every other week. 

It was their week to go twelve days ago. 

They went through a couple of curves and then the pipe on the right side of their motorcycle touched the road.

“I felt the pipe grab the ground. I felt the bike slide. I mean like I can replay this in my mind slow motion, me sliding Binh was sliding in front of me,” said Mary Dennis.

The motorcycle hit a tree and Officer Dennis landed right next to it. 

“I heard the bike just hit the tree and Binh flew up face down into the woods so I jumped up, I ran over to him. By that time, traffic had stopped. The people that were helping me — a man and a wife — she came and grabbed me cause I was over there with Binh,  he literally was face down feet up lower part of his body was twisted, and she said, ‘Honey, just come over here with me.’ She said, ‘He’s gone.’”

But then Mary saw his fingers move. By that time a medic from Indianapolis had stopped to help. 

He was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis and was revived twice on the way there. 

The first six days he was in the hospital, he had five major surgeries, including brain, vascular, and spine.

“No movement so far in the lower extremities, but his spinal cord was not cut, so that’s hope.”

Hope is what Mary is holding onto for her husband and best friend.

“If I could do something over, I wouldn’t change anything, that man I mean to be, no one’s perfect, but he’s pretty close to being perfect.”

Dennis is in the process of rehab and Mary believes he will one day walk again.
