Pet Pals TV: Coronavirus and pets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week Patty Spitler shares an interesting and informative story about our four-legged and furry friend population.

This time the host of Pet Pals TV stopped by Daybreak with her pal Stewie and her friend, Tom Dock with Noah’s Animal Hospital.

Tom and Patty talked about the effects of coronavirus on pets and what pet owners need to understand about the virus.

“We have to be really, really careful, first of all when we say coronavirus because there are, I couldn’t find an end to the number of species and strains of coronavirus,” said Dock. “There is a canine coronavirus that causes diarrhea, watery diarrhea in our pets. We used to vaccinate for it, but we don’t now because it’s a very self-limited disease.”

Dock said there is a dog in Hong Kong that is in quarantine that has tested weakly positive for COVID-19. Dock said health officials believe the dog contracted the virus from its owner since the dog is not experiencing any symptoms.

Dock said there is currently no vaccine for COVID-19 for pets. Click the video to learn more.
