‘Shining a Light’ on Monument Circle honors Martin Luther King Jr.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISY) — A wreath- placing ceremony Wednesday night at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

It was the first of two events in advance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday.

Beginning Wednesday night, a special “Shining a Light” lighting presentation honoring King played play after the signature light and music salute on Monument Circle. It will play every night through Monday.

Thomas Brown, a civil rights activist, said, “King laid the foundation of nonviolence, and I think that’s what we got to re-resurrect: his methods, techniques and concepts of nonviolence and how to apply them in strategy and tactics in this 21st century.”

The “Shining a light’ presentation will be put on the Facebook page of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.

The commission at noon Thursday will host a virtual event, the 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration. Go online to register for the celebration.
