Traffic stop in Bartholomew Co. leads to drug arrest

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Officials say a traffic stop in Bartholomew County lead to a drug arrest Friday afternoon.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department said an officer stopped Jared Newman, 18, and his passenger Sarah Ball, 18, of Columbus, on 650 N just east of US 31.

Police said the sheriff smelled odor of marijuana in the vehicle and saw green leafy particles on Balls lap. They said the sheriff also found a cellophane wrapper containing a green leafy substance.

Police said Newman admitted he had been smoking marijuana just prior to being stopped, and that Ball admitted to having a marijuana pipe and a grinder hidden in her purse.

Newman was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and endangerment and possession of marijuana. Ball was arrested for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

As of Friday afternoon, Newman was still booked in the Bartholomew County Jail on a $8,500 bond.

Ball has been released on a $6,000 bond.
