TSA officials prepare for busy weekend at Indy airport
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Officials with the Indianapolis International Airport are prepared for what is expected to be a busy weekend of travel. The reason is because of all the students on fall break throughout central Indiana.
TSA officials at the airport expect Friday could be the second busiest day of travel in airport history. The record day of travel was on Feb. 6, 2012 after Super Bowl XLVI.
It is expected that more than 17,900 passengers will go through TSA checkpoints at the airport Friday. More than 16,500 are expected on Monday.
TSA officials said they plan to use explosive detection K9s’s to help speed up the process through checkpoints. Additionally, all TSA checkpoint lines will be open during the busiest travel times.
Travelers are asked to arrive two hours before scheduled flight departure and plan ahead for parking and traffic.
People should check flight status because some flights along the east coast could be impacted because of Hurricane Michael.
For those who have not flown in a while, as of fall 2017 TSA now requires passengers remove all electronic devices larger than a cell phone while moving belongings through security scanners. That includes devices such as e-readers, tablets, CPAP machines and DVD players.
The airport also offers a wait-time predictor on its website that estimates wait times every half hour for Terminal A and Terminal B. That can be found here.
