Man heralded as hero for saving child from two pit bulls

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Community members and health care professionals gathered Friday to honor a local hero. A man put his life in jeopardy when he saved a 12-year-old special needs child from being attacked by two pit bulls.

Russell Hill, 60, sustained multiple bite marks all over his body from the animals. He underwent several surgical procedures, including skin grafts and physical therapy with the IU Health trauma team.

His family cried when he was awarded the hero plaque from IU Health. They thanked everyone including the IMPD officer who saved his life when he shot and killed one of the pit bulls.

Several IU Health nurses attended the ceremony, surprising Hill. They said that he had a positive attitude regardless of the pain he endured.

Hill participated in a panel discussion that included discussing his recovery. IU Health said talking to patients helps first responders and emergency medical professionals understand best care practices.

“My dad is my hero. He told me he would do it all over again for anyone.  It’s been a long recovery with a lot of up’s and downs. It’s amazing how many people came out to support us to show they care,” Russell Hill Jr. said.

“Words can’t describe how proud I am to call him dad. It has been tough and hard to see him go through this, but he’s tough. That day he was more concerned for the child’s safety than his own.  That is the kind (of) man he is and why so many people love him,” said Shalonda Hill

Hill has a Go Fund me page to help with medical expenses. To date, he has raised over $13,000. His medical bills exceed over $50,000.
