Marion Co. top officials to get first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Mayor Joe Hogsett and Marion County Public Health Director Dr. Virginia Caine will get their first COVID-19 vaccine Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Caine participated in a Facebook Live Wednesday and answered vaccine myths and misconceptions. She says getting the right amount of doses produced is the struggle. The plan was for 20 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to first be available and now there is only going to be about 4 million. By the end of March, Dr. Caine says the country will have 20 million.

In April, between Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, there should be more than 100 million doses.

“I look to see that not only the teachers, but our Indy bus drivers and other essential workers who are working in the grocery stores and on the front lines are able to get vaccinated by then,” she said.

Dr. Caine is participating in the WISH-TV town hall, “Overcoming COVID.” Experts from across the state will focus on vaccines, mental health, education and the economy. The discussion will focus on what to expect in the coming weeks and months. It will air at 6 p.m. Thursday night.

The Marion County Public Health Department says the goal is to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as the doses become available.
