Latinos, legislators meet to discuss future improvements

2020 Indiana Latino Legislative Breakfast

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Latino Institute is continuing its work in making Indiana a better place for Latinos and people.

The annual Indiana Latino Legislative Breakfast on Tuesday brought out lawmakers and local leaders to discuss ways to improve the state’s future.

The Latino population is growing not only in Indianapolis, but also nationwide. Local leaders say, at this rate, Latinos will be the majority in a few decades.

Organizers said the breakfast was a chance to discuss topics and possible legislation for the future. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle came out for the event.

The event was also a chance to exchange perspectives on challenges in the Latino community. One of the issues talked about was education in the Latino community. Organizers said a better educated population makes for more educated decisions, and that can only mean good things for everyone.

“It’s a very important thing because as the Latino community grows and becomes more and more part of Indiana it becomes a strong message to the entire state of Indiana. That the issues that affect one group affects all groups,” said Mario Rodriguez, an Indiana Latino Institute board member.

When it comes to education, leaders are hoping to improve in-state tuition options. Many Latino students looking to go to college are having to pay international tuition.

A few other topics centered around health care and community safety. The hope is that events like this get lawmakers talking to ultimately make some change.
