One dead as crash closes part of SR 37 on Hamilton/Madison Co. line

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A Tuesday morning crash on State Road 37 closed the NB lanes.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to reports of a three-car crash at 7380 North State Road 37 in Elwood just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputies said a 2014 Blue Dodge Dart, driven by 20-year-old Allison Wimmer, was headed south on State Road 37 from State Road 128, when it crossed  the center line.  The Dart then struck a northbound 2012 Buick Enclave driven by 84-year-old Frank Morton.

The collision between the Enclave and the Dart caused the Enclave to spin 360 degrees, hitting a southbound 2008 Nissan Altima.

The Altima was driven by 61-year-old Cheryl Caudill, Barbara Eaton, 85, was a passenger in the vehicle.

The Dart eventually came to a stop on the east side of State Road 37 in a field.  The Altima and the Enclave ended up on the west side of the roadway.

Wimmer and Eaton were both taken St. Vincent Hospital in Elwood for their injuries. Crews transported Morton IU Health Methodist Hospital.  Caudill was taken to Indianapolis St. Vincent Hospital via helicopter.

However, Eaton later died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
