Police: Cheerleader used pot brownies to buy votes for homecoming queen

(WCMH) — A Michigan police department is investigating after officials say a 17-year-old cheerleader tried to buy homecoming queen votes with pot brownies.

It isn’t unusual for cheerleaders to bring goodie bags for the football team during homecoming week. Some treats recently passed out at Hartford High School in Michigan had a little something extra.

“The principal mentioned they were getting some tips in about some possible brownies that may have been laced with marijuana oil,” said Michael Prince, a Hartford police officer.

Police said the brownies were brought to school for the football players. The remaining brownies were used to sway votes to become homecoming queen, police said.

“The school’s taking this very seriously. They are doing their own investigation and they’re just starting to turn over some of the statements from the students possibly involved or witnesses,” said Prince.

Three of the 12 brownies brought to the school were seized by police. They have been sent to the stat’s crime lab for testing.

“I’ve read about things across this country. It’s not happened with anything that I know of in this area. I’ve been an officer a long time. And whenever you think you’ve heard it all, something just about daily comes up like wow,” said Prince.

Police say the distribution of the brownies on campus could lead to a felony charge for anyone involved.
