Three arrested in welfare fraud, drug investigation at gas station
MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Three people have been arrested after a year-long investigation at a gas station in Madison County.
Investigators said three people committed welfare fraud and dealt drugs out of the SB Gasway at 2754 E. County Road 100 S.
Amrik Singh, Buta Singh and Angela Stoops have been arrested as a result.
The joint investigation by the Madison County Drug Task Force and the United State Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General Investigation began in November 2015. Undercover officers said the workers would overcharge items that were purchased with an EBT card and give a portion of the overcharge back to the officer in cash.
In one instance, a cashier charged $101.55 for an energy drink and gave back $50 to the officer.
Undercover officers also purchased drugs, including synthetic drugs, at the gas station.
Buta Singh faces nine felony counts related to dealing drugs and four misdemeanor counts of welfare fraud. Amrik Singh faces two misdemeanor counts of welfare fraud. Stoops was arrested on one misdemeanor count of welfare fraud.
The business has been shut down and the gas pumps turned off.
Computers, registers, financial records, surveillance equipment, cash and illegal drugs were seized. The investigation is ongoing and could result in more arrests.
