Victim in Zionsville shooting dies; search continues for suspect

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Zionsville police are looking for a man who shot and killed an 82-year-old man on Wednesday.

Officers said someone shot John Clements outside his home in the 600 block of Terrace Drive just before 1 p.m.

According to a Tweet, by the Town of Zionsville, Zionsville High School and Eagle Elementary were placed on lockdown just after 1:10. Several minutes later, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said all Zionsville Community Schools are on lockdown.

Police believe the suspect used a high-caliber weapon based on shell casings found at the scene.  They don’t know why the man shot Clements and police said they don’t believe the man stole anything from Clements.

Neighbor Ellen Butz said she couldn’t believe this type of crime happened close to her house.

“People don’t even lock their doors around here, I mean they should but, they don’t, I mean you just don’t expect it to happen,” Butz said.

“You read about it in the paper in Indianapolis, oh another shooting. We had some friends that recently moved downtown and like that body on Oriental was around the corner from them. They went it’s kind of different from living in Zionsville, you just don’t have it,” Butz said.

Police were searching for a black male in a white late-model Chevy Impala. Officers said they don’t have a description of the suspect’s clothing, so they were pulling over nearly every white Impala they saw.

Zionsville Police Chief Robert Knox said this is his department’s first homicide investigation since 1997. A double homicide that occurred in Zionsville city limits earlier this year was investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Zionsville Police Department is going to do everything we possibly can to bring this person to justice,” Knox said.

The lockdown on the schools was lifted around 2:30 p.m.

Zionsville police said they notified every police agency in the area of what happened and they say officers across the state are looking for the suspect.
