Crews respond to downtown building fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Several people were displaced due to an overnight fire at a downtown apartment building, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

According to IFD, the fire broke out at a building in the 800 block of Capitol Avene just before 1:30 Tuesday morning.

Crews were able to get the fire under control at approximately 2:15 a.m.

Officials said the fire was contained to the roof of the building and did not enter the building.

IFD said everyone was able to make it out of the building safely. However, one firefighter did suffer a slight shoulder injury.

An investigation is now underway in order to determine the cause of the fire.

IFD said the while more than 100 people initially evacuated the structure, the Red Cross is helping 17 residents from 15 apartments with housing.

Also, the department said there was heavy water damage found in the building due to the sprinkler system.
