Prosecutor: employee stole $164k from Anthem

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis woman has been charged for allegedly altering dozens of health insurance claims.

Kristy Emery, 33, is accused of stealing approximately $164,000 from Anthem, Inc. while she was an employee there.

According to investigators, Emery altered 58 claim forms between September 2012 and April 2013.

Investigators say Emery would manually adjust the claims and submit them under her and her husband’s names.

An internal investigation by Anthem stated that Emery adjusted one claim from $325 to $4,365 for a visit to a clinic that Anthem says Emery was never a patient at.

Emery has been charged with theft, a Class C felony.

The investigation into Emery was conducted by Anthem and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office Grand Jury Division.

“The allegation is that Ms. Emery took advantage of her position at Anthem to benefit herself personally,” said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry. “Regardless of the value of monetary loss, we encourage employers to report potential criminal activity to our office or law enforcement agencies.”

An initial hearing has not yet been set.
