Warner Bros. wants to build a tram from Burbank to the Hollywood Sign

BURBANK, Calif. (KRON) – Warner Bros. has proposed building a $100 million aerial tram that would carry tourists to and from the Hollywood Sign.

Dubbed the “Hollywood Skyway,” the tram was proposed by Warner Bros. to Los Angeles this week.

The tramway would take visitors on a 6-minute ride more than 1 mile up the back of Mt. Lee to a new visitors center near the sign, with pathways to a viewing area, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The idea of the tram is to divert traffic from the nearby area, which includes the Hollywood Hills and Griffith Park neighborhoods, as well as preserving access to the sign, where tourists posing for photos contribute to congestion.

The project is likely to take about five years to complete, the Times reported.

At this time, officials recommend hiking as an option to get the best views of the sign, and the city also has buses running to nearby Griffith Observatory.

There’s limited parking beneath the sign.

Local tourist officials expect annual visitors to Los Angeles to reach 50 million by 2020.
