3 in custody after nearly 30 mile police chase

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A police chase that started in downtown Indianapolis Friday morning ended 26 miles away in Morgan County.

According to IMPD officials, police received a report of individuals in a car pointing a shotgun out of the car near Washington and East streets. That’s when the chase began.

Police say the suspect vehicle took off and went onto the interstate, leading police eventually onto Interstate 70 toward the Indianapolis International Airport. The suspects made it out to Plainfield, then got onto State Road 67.

Officers put out stop sticks on SR 67 and the suspect vehicle’s rear tire deflated. The vehicle continued on for half a mile before coming to a stop near Centerton.

Police took three people into custody – one woman and two men. The two passengers were immediately apprehended by officers but police say the driver ran before an Indiana State Police K-9 unit caught them.

Police say they found shotgun shells in the car. There was also a suspicious package located inside, so officers called in the bomb squad to investigate. Later in the morning, police said they did find a potentially explosive device and rendered it safe.

Officials say the driver is a habitual traffic violator and had a warrant. It’s unclear what charges the three individuals will face after this chase.

The car was registered in Franklin, Indiana.
