Madison County sheriff seeks man after sex assault at Mounds State Park

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – Authorities on Tuesday were investigating the sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman at a state park.

Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger said Indiana Department of Natural Resources officers asked his office to take over the investigation. The sexual assault occurred about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at Mounds State Park, 4306 Mounds Road. That’s east of South Rangeline Road between state roads 32 and 332.

The sheriff said the woman was jogging through the park and came upon a man who was standing alone along the trail and was acting suspicious. “As she attempted to divert to another trail the suspect came up from behind her and took her to the ground. He struck her in the face several times and groped her. She fought him off and he fled,” said an email from the sheriff.

The man was described as a Latin American in his 20s, from 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, with an athletic build.

The sheriff did not indicate the severity of the woman’s injuries.

Sheriff’s detectives said the victim and other witnesses saw the male. A male who attempted to intervene called 911.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff’s office at 765-646-9281 or Crime Stoppers at 765-649-8310.
