MUNCIE, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) — Officials in Muncie will Thursday cut the ribbon on a $9 million mixed-use riverfront development in the city’s downtown. White River Lofts, which features 55 luxury apartments and 2,000 square feet of commercial space, is the first project in the city’s White River Canal District.

The district is part of Muncie’s “Central City” area, which the city says includes its highest concentration of place, economic, cultural and educational assets. White River Lofts is located in a Federal Opportunity Zone as well.

“This is the first step of activating one of Muncie’s best natural resources, the White River, in downtown,” Mayor Dan Ridenour said in a news release. “The City is investing in adjacent property to build a Riverwalk and Community Gathering space as our part of the project. We are excited to see this project moving toward completion.”

The city says White River Lofts is already 27% leased and currently accepting more lease inquiries.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. at White River Lofts, located at 400 West Washington Street.
