Police: Suspect high on meth during attempted carjacking

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Burger King parking lot at SR 59 and SR 42 for calls of a suspect attempting to get into multiple vehicles.

The Clay County deputy arrived just before 4 p.m. Saturday and spoke with a group of people claiming a suspect in a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans had tried to get into their vehicles.

One victim stated she saw the suspect walk towards her vehicle, attempt to open the passenger door but the victim was able to get the door locked fast enough. A second victim stated the suspect was able to open the door of her van and that her ‘children were in fear for their lives because they did not know what the suspect was attempting to do.’

A third victim stated the passenger window was down far enough for the suspect to reach inside the window and attempt to unlock the car. This third victim, who had a concealed carry permit, produced his handgun and ‘ordered the suspect to stop or her would shoot him’ the release stated.

The suspect fled south of the Burger King towards the Best Western Hotel.

The suspect was located and identified as Chad Carter from Indianapolis. Carter told the deputy he was ‘high on methamphetamine and was desperate for a ride to Indianapolis.’ Carter was arrested and faces possible charges of attempted robbery and two charges of attempted auto theft.
