Suspect dead following Owen Co. SWAT standoff

SPENCER, Ind. (WTWO/AP) — A situation involving a special tactics and weapons team that began Friday in northern Owen County came to an end on Saturday.

The standoff started about 11:20 p.m. Thursday when deputies responded to a domestic issue report at the home.

The standoff began at a home on Kinnickinick Ridge. Authorities said a man forced his way inside and initially held two women and two children hostage. One of the women was able to escape. Both of the children — ages 9 and 2 — were released by Friday afternoon through negotiations with the man.

Authorities said the standoff ended shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday after officials shot and killed the suspect when he made himself visible while he held one of the hostages at gunpoint.

Shots were fired from the suspect toward the officers in the ordeal. There were no other injuries reported.

The entire standoff lasted over 31 hours.

Police on Saturday declined to describe the relationship between the man and the hostages.
