Thousands of residents mistakenly told they owe back taxes

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Department of Revenue says thousands of Indiana residents have mistakenly been told they owe back taxes.

The state said letters were sent in error. They have not said what caused the mistake to happen.

People also reported getting phone calls with the same message, according to the state. They were told they had until Nov. 16 to pay, or else they’d face a double penalty.

The Associated Press said about 150,000 Indiana taxpayers got the letter, but they are not behind on their taxes.

If you received a letter, you are asked to call 844-TAXES-IN.
