Wanted woman killed after deputy-involved shooting in northeast Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The hunt for a female fugitive in northeast Albuquerque on Tuesday ended in gunfire.

A woman was killed in the latest Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy-involved shooting.

“That person presented a firearm, and deadly force was used in the incident,” said Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales.

Tuesday’s crime scene shut down part of Eubank as law enforcement from multiple agencies swarmed the Mountain Run Apartment complex.

“This is a very dynamic, ongoing investigation,” said Conrad Candelaria, with the U.S. Marshals.

Investigators said the search for the female fugitive started Tuesday morning.

Detectives said a security threat investigative unit with the Department of Corrections was trying to apprehend a woman wanted on a felony warrant for assaulting a peace officer.

However, deputies said that woman was able to get away in a stolen vehicle.

“As a result, they called the U.S. Marshals task force which is made up of different law enforcement agencies, local, state and federal,” explained Sheriff Gonzales.

Sheriff Gonzales said it was his deputies who caught up with the fugitive at the apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.

According to investigators, the female fugitive pulled a gun.

It’s unclear if the woman fired shots, but investigators said at least one Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy opened fire.

The suspect was hit, rushed to the hospital and later died.

Exactly how many shots were fired, and why exactly the woman was running is still unclear.

“Those kind of details we can’t release because the investigation has not been completed,” said Sheriff Gonzales.

Investigators were at the apartment complex for hours, combing the area for evidence. They’re waiting to notify the woman’s family before they release her identity to the public.

No one else was injured in Tuesday’s shooting.
