Woman shot, killed in Fort Wayne car

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A woman is dead after being shot Sunday night in Fort Wayne.

Police got a call about a shooting in the 300 block of Esmond Street, between Barr and Clinton, around 11:30 p.m. Police said a neighbor called 911 after hearing gunfire in an alley in that block.

When officers arrived to the area they found the victim inside a car. Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Detectives were told the victim was talking to a male before the shooting happened. She was in the area picking up a family member who lived close by.

No suspect information was immediately released. Police ask you to call Crime Stoppers if you have information. That number is 436-STOP (436-7867).

An autopsy will be performed Monday to determine a cause and manner of death. The victim’s name should be released after that.

A spokesman for the police department said there was no indication this shooting is related to other recent incidents. Four shootings have happened in a span of four days in Fort Wayne, leaving four people dead.

“It’s tough for the victims and family members,” said FWPD Spokesman Michael Joyner. “It’s just another unfortunate event. What can you say about it? Taking one’s life… very unfortunate.”
