1st named storm of Atlantic hurricane season possible this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season is still a few weeks away, but eyes will be on a tropical system over the weekend.

The system in the southeast part of Florida will move over the Bahamas and head into the Atlantic. It may strengthen into a tropical storm.

Whether or not it gets a name, it is still going to produce some heavy rainfall. Several inches of rain will be possible in southeast Florida and the Bahamas.

Items to watch this weekend will be heavy rain and high surf. It doesn’t look like the Hurricane Hunter aircraft will be investigating this system Friday, but that may change Saturday.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1. Since 2015 there have been about six named storms before June 1. So while it’s not very common, we can see named storms in May.

If we do see this storm get a name it will be Arthur followed by Bertha. So all eyes will be on the Atlantic this weekend.
