Church bus driver in fatal I-70 crash arrested
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The driver of the church bus that involved in a fatal wreck on I-70 last week has been arrested.
Charles Goodman, 53, from Chicago, was arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail.
According to online jail records, Goodman was charged with reckless homicide and driving while suspended. He did not have a bond listed.
Goodman was driving a group from the St. Jude Family Worship Center in Gary to religious convention in Ohio.
Court records state that the driver, Charles Goodman, told authorities he feel asleep behind the wheel and when he woke up, he was too close to avoid striking a tree.
Greenfield Fire Chief James Roberts said that Jacob Williams, a 6-year-old, was killed in the accident and that his family was on the bus with him.
The crash backed up traffic for miles and sent emergency crews transporting the 10 patients to three different area hospitals.
Goodman suffered a broken arm and a fractured jaw during the crash. Officials said according the evidence, Goodman hit two trees before the bus flipped and caught on fire.
