Anderson police shoot 24-year-old during raid on home

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – A police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after a shooting during the raid of a home early Wednesday morning, according to the Anderson Police Department.

Maj. Joel Sandefur of the police department said in a news release that Jonathan Ashley, 24, was the target of the raid. Sandefur said Ashley pointed a gun at Madison County Drug Task Force members as they entered the home, and he was shot in the arm as a result of his actions. Ashley was later taken to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital.

Sandefur said the name of the officer was being withheld. 

Police said the drug task force and members of the Anderson Police Department special weapons and tactics team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a house in the 1900 block of East 50th Street around 5 a.m. Wednesday. 

The warrant was in relation to a task force drug investigation that targetet Ashely, Sandefur said.

Other people in the home during the raid were not injured. No officer was injured. 

The unnamed officer will be on leave while the shooting is investigated, Sandefur said.
