INDIANAPOLIS – November 22, 2019 – Al Carl, WISH-TV News Director announced that Katiera Winfrey has been hired as News 8’s Multicultural Reporter, the state’s first-ever television journalist dedicated exclusively to covering stories affecting Indiana’s diverse population.

“Katiera will report on issues and topics, ranging from serious to positive news, from different cultural perspectives,” said Carl. “This new position marks a commitment on the part of WISH-TV to showcase Indiana communities and people of all cultures in a profound way.”

Katiera returns to WISH-TV, after beginning her career behind the scenes at News 8 in 2010. She later worked at stations in Houston, Odessa, and Tyler, Texas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Allentown, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from North Central High School. Katiera received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications Broadcast Journalism at Texas Southern University. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

“Our Multicultural Reporter is just one of several specialized journalists we’re adding to our newsroom that are very much needed in the eyes of our viewers,” said DuJuan McCoy, Owner, President, and CEO of Circle City Broadcasting. “Katiera’s Indianapolis roots, reporting experience and passion to shine a light on our rich multicultural community will all be to the benefit of our viewers. We are fortunate to have Katiera join our staff, and I am eager to watch her stories unfold across all our content platforms.”

Katiera will focus on, but not be limited to, news and issues of concern to women, millennials, Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, Native Americans, and the LGBTQ community.

“Not only is returning home a blessing for me and my family, but I’m equally excited and honored to be the state’s first dedicated Multicultural Reporter,” said Winfrey. “I’m very eager to report on and share the many unique multicultural stories that are not currently getting the coverage they deserve.”

WISH-TV, one of the highest rated news organizations in Indiana, produces 76.5 hours per week of news and original programming, more than any other television station in the state, and among the most of any in the country.
