1 dies in 5-vehicle crash on I-465 near I-65 on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A five-vehicle crash Friday night on I-465 on the south side left one person dead, police said.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said emergency crews were called to the crash shortly before 7:40 p.m. Friday on I-465 westbound at the 0.5 Mile Marker, near East Street. That’s close to the I-65 interchange.

Troopers believe a pickup pulling a camper had broken down on the left shoulder of the interstate. The pickup was being hooked to a wrecker from Zores Wrecker Service when another vehicle left the road, struck the camper’s rear, spun back onto I-465 and hit two other vehicles. The person in the vehicle that had left the road died at the scene.

“Although not suspected, the deceased driver will be tested for possible intoxication, which is protocol in all serious or fatal crashes,” said a news release from Perrine.

The name of the man was not released pending notification of family.

Indiana Department of Transportation said on Twitter the interstate was expected to reopen by 2 a.m. Saturday.
