Butler to add metal detectors at Hinkle Fieldhouse basketball games

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hinkle Fieldhouse will add metal detectors beginning with the Bulldogs’ 2018-2019 basketball season that opens Sunday, Butler University announced Monday.

The walk-through detectors, known as magnotometers, will be at each entrance to the Fieldhouse.

“Butler continues to take steps to enact industry-standard policies that prioritize the safety of fans at events,” the release said. “These resources are not in response to any specific threat, but rather in an effort to align Butler’s safety practices with the recommendations of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and FBI.

“In addition to requiring the least amount of screening time, the walk-through magnetometers have been determined by studies to be less intrusive and more effective than wanding each individual fan as they enter the venue.”

Fans were being encouraged to factor in the security check when arriving for games.

Butler basketball’s exhibition season begins Sunday as the Bulldogs host Tiffin at 2 p.m.
