Man dies in Madison County crash

MADISON  COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Emergency crews responded to a fatal crash in Madison County Monday afternoon, according to Madison County dispatchers.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened around 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 13 and State Road 38. They say that two vehicles were involved and that one person died in the crash.

The person was later identified as 36-year-old Daniel J. Rooney, of Pendleton.

The sheriff’s department says Rooney was driving south on State Road 13 when he veered into the northbound lane of State Road 13 and crashed head-on into a semi.

The semi was driven by 52-year-old James M. Bendo, of Crosby, Texas.

Rooney was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Vendo was taken to an Indianapolis hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The intersection at State Road 13 and State Road 38 was closed while crews worked to clear the crash.
