Purdue employees, students now have off-campus Wi-Fi access

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Purdue University faculty, staff and students are now able to access the university’s wireless network outside of campus.

With a partnership between Purdue and the cites of Lafayette and West Lafayette, people can hook up to the network in downtown Lafayette, Chauncey Village and Happy Hollow Park.

Purdue hot spots also include Columbian Park, the West Lafayette Public Library, Celery Bog Nature Center and the West Lafayette Farmers Market. People accessing the Purdue network while off campus experience the same level of security as they would on campus.

West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis says access to free Wi-Fi should be a priority for any modern city.

“Wireless, right now, seems to be a marketable commodity,” Dennis said. “But our hope is that at some point it won’t be the access that is going to be marketed, it’s going to be the information and the access to that information that’s going to be a priority.”

Dennis said there are still plenty of areas where free internet cannot be accessed in the city. He says West Lafayette is working to expand Wi-Fi areas in the near future.
