World War II-era bridge coming down in eastern Indiana

CEDAR GROVE, Ind. (AP) – Indiana transportation officials say they’re taking down a World War II-era steel truss bridge over the Whitewater River in eastern Indiana.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said Monday morning that the bridge would come down Wednesday morning. Transportation officials say the bridge was closed to traffic more than 25 years ago. It is about a half-mile south of U.S. Highway 52 near Cedar Grove.

The state has hired a construction company to demolish the bridge. Transportation officials warn that the company will detonate explosives at about 10 a.m. Wednesday morning to help bring the structure down. Police will be on site at that time to enforce a safe zone.

Cedar Grove is about 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio.
