16 displaced after northwest side apartment fire
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – 16 people were displaced after an apartment fire on Thursday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.
IFD arrived at The Woods at Oak Crossing apartments in the 3200 block of Merrick Lane at 1:30 p.m., to fire showing from the rear balcony of a second floor apartment.
The renter of the second floor apartment told IFD that she found smoke in her front room prior to the smoke detectors going off. She and her three-year-old son evacuated the building.
Nine people were at home at the time of the fire. Two people were assisted by firefighters out of their apartments. The two were taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital for possible smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday afternoon. IFD had the fire under control in 25 minutes. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damages.
IFD and the American Red Cross will work to provided shelter for those displaced.
