Baby gorilla born after rare C-section at Bristol Zoo

(CNN) – Britain’s Bristol Zoo recently celebrated the arrival of a newborn baby gorilla, delivered by a caesarean section.

The decision to use the procedure came earlier this month when the mother showed symptoms of a potentially life-threatening condition.

Zoo officials say the birth marks one of only a handful of times worldwide that a baby gorilla has been delivered via C-section.

It was a first for the zoo and for the doctor, who has delivered hundreds of human infants by C-section, but never a gorilla.
