‘It’s pretty scary’: Shots fired in Boys & Girls Club parking lot

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Metro police are investigating after a “suspicious” person was seen firing shots in the parking lot of an Indianapolis Boys & Girls Club.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the Boys & Girls Club located at 5228 W. Minnesota St. early Wednesday after a man said he saw a suspicious vehicle just before 3 a.m. The man told police he confronted the people in the vehicle before the driver drove away and fired shots into the air while leaving.

According to the police report, additional shots were also fired at different locations after the people in the vehicle left the parking lot.

“It scares me. It’s pretty scary,” said Sheila Short, who lives in the area.

Short didn’t hear any gunshots, but she says her grandson loves to spend time with her at the playground of the Boys & Girls Club. According to Short, they go there just about every day and now she is worried.

“It’s so close, it could’ve got one of us, if the shot came down,” Short said.

No one was hurt. But, Short says she’s going to look for bullet holes in her home.

“Just to check,” she said.

The play area her grandson enjoys may feel a little different now.

“It’s just crazy. It scares me to take my grandson there,” Short said. “Yeah, I’ll still do it, but I’ll be very cautious.”

A spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis said the incident was isolated.

“It had absolutely nothing to do with the Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis,” said Maggie Lewis, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis. “There were no children in that space at the time.”

Police are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to call the non-emergency line at 317-327-3811 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
